INTERWOVEN WEBSITE
PROJECT
This project explores data as both content and creative material. Students select a topic of their choice, collect or source relevant data, and develop an expressive visualization that reflects the nature of the information itself.
Moving beyond traditional charts, the goal is to experiment with innovative forms like print, spatial, digital, or material while thoughtfully encoding, organizing, and presenting data. The project emphasizes creative exploration, clear structure, and reflection on how visualization can generate new insights.
RATIONALE
Interwoven is a mini-exhibition prototype that physically visualizes the global fast fashion supply chain through a tactile, minimalist installation. Built with Bristol board, wood, string, and nails, each black thread represents a single item from my own wardrobe, tracing it back to its country of manufacture. By mapping my closet as data, the project transforms an abstract global network into a visible web of connections—revealing the distance, labor, and systems behind everyday clothing.
The installation uses material symbolism to deepen meaning: wooden slats represent the unseen foundation of labor, while a thread spool and plaque invite reflection on personal responsibility. By turning my own consumption into a case study, Interwoven reframes fast fashion as both a global system and an intimate, individual reality.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
-
Translate complex global systems into a clear, physical data visualization.
-
Use materiality and spatial design to communicate abstract information.
-
Transform personal data into a broader social and political narrative.
-
Explore exhibition design as a medium for storytelling and public engagement.
-
Develop symbolic visual language to strengthen conceptual meaning.
-
Connect research, systems thinking, and physical prototyping into one cohesive installation.
